Championship Road Race - 9th September

The 9th Sept 2006 saw 23 riders’ takes to the roads to battle out the Mackay Club Championship Road race around the famous Eton/Homebush/City gates circuit. The 56km circuit proved challenging with it’s 10km hilly start and then strong 20 knot winds pushing in the face of all riders from Eton to Rosella.

Damien Harris and Evan Cory managed a credible 37km/hr average after breaking away from the elite men’s group early in the hills, Damo sneaking past Evan to gain line honors. Unfortunately, as both where not members of the MCC, they where not eligible for the club championships awards.

After spending much of the year sidelined with a broken collar bone, Jade Hammer proved that 2006 was not a complete waste of time snatching a scintillating sprint finish from Cameron Single (2nd) and Jamo (3rd).

Roman Mosshammer launched a torrid solo breakaway attempt and held a field of 5 riders at bay for almost 20km. Roman was then joined by Craig Pinkstone & Garry France whom also broke from the pack, whereby the 3 then rode together to the finishing line. This gave Craig, Garry and Roman first place in the M2, M3, and M4 divisions respectively.

Nick Willy proved his absence has done little to diminish his power house efforts to claim first place in the M5 division followed closely by Brian Hammer & Richard Stewart. Kody Kemp collected first place in the junior division, John O’Meara (Mr. Consistent) took first place in M6 division and Alison Friswell stunned the crowd with a blistering finish to claim first in the women’s division.
